B1428 Lube Filter for GM Engines

Late model gasoline engines equipped with electronic ignitions and controls start faster than previous models. Quicker starting creates an immediate need for lubrication in the valve train. Delayed lubrication can result in "cold knock" on start up. Chevrolet reports in their Dealer Service Bulletin that "cold knock" usually occurs after the vehicle is parked for eight or more hours in ambient temperatures of 35 degrees Fahrenheit or less.

If an engine is experiencing "cold knock", Chevrolet recommends their dealers first replace the oil filter with one containing an anti-drainback valve. As its name implies, the anti-drainback valve prevents oil from draining back out of the filter after the lube system is depressurized. Chevrolet also notes that, in some instances, this action
may not alleviate the knock, and further actions may need to be performed by the dealer.

For these engine applications, Baldwin has now introduced the B1428 lube filter. This filter incorporates an anti-drainback valve for oil retention. The B1428 is a direct replacement for the B6 in late model GM trucks with 5.0L and 5.7L engines, replacing the OEM filter (AC PF1218).

As mentioned earlier, in some instances the addition of an anti-drainback valve to the filter may not completely eliminate the knock. If a customer continues to experience the knock, they should consult their dealer for further actions as specified by GM.
